Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice marks the beginning of winter and is the shortest day of the year. On this day, it seems as if the nighttime darkness lasts all day and all night. At the North Pole, the sun never rises on this day. It is not the coldest days of winter, as the northern hemisphere continues to lose more heat than it gains. This will continue until late in winter, as the longer daylight hours at that point begin to have a net warming affect. But for now, heat up a cup of hot chocolate and put another log on the fire! Winter will be here for a while. By the way, while the northern hemisphere is experiencing it's shortest day, the southern hemisphere is basking in sunshine and enjoying the first day of summer. For thousands of years, Winter Solstice  has celebrated the new solar year. It celebrates the return of the sun, as every day now will see more sun. The sun is at it's southernmost point, and now begins it's long, six month journey north. Winter Solstice is also bee

National Roof Over Your Head Day

Date When Celebrated :  Always December 3 Today is   National Roof Over Your Head Day . It is a day of appreciation for the things we have, starting with the roof over our heads. For most of us, a roof over our head signifies living in a house that protects us from the elements, keeping us warm, dry, and cozy. Unfortunately, not everyone is as lucky as you and I. There are many homeless people right here in our country. Some people live in a cardboard box on the street...... literally. There are millions of people around the world who live in poverty or disaster areas, and do not have a home to keep them comfortable and safe. Spend a few minutes  being thankful that you are not homeless, and appreciating your roof and home today. Also make a contribution to a homeless shelter, so others can come in out of the rain. The Bra was patented (1914) Brief History of the Bra Before there were bras, women often used a span of fabric to support their breasts. Often this was achieved by either binding their breast with the cloth wrapped soley around the chest. Another method was to take the cloth and support the from under the breasts and over the shoulders as well as having the the breast bound with the cloth around the chest. Around the 16th century, woman began to wear corsets to support their breasts. This was a garment that covered most of a womans torso, giving support and lift to her breasts while giving a smooth, curved, and thin shape to her waist and hips. These were often strengthend with bone (originally made from actual bone). The downside of this garment was that it was difficult to put on and take off, as well as being highly restrictive to breathing, and quite uncomfortable. The bra would evolve out of this garment when people speculated about whether it would be possible to divide th

Ladies Night

Image
I had my first Lemon Drop!         While at the Melting Pot after looking over the menu several times and still not coming up with anything that I thought I would like I just asked the waitress for something lemony.  That's when she suggested the Lemon Drop. And since I love all things lemon I said sure!       This was the perfect drink for me.  It wasn't to sweet or tart (as long as you like lemons).  To me I was reminded of my childhood favorite Lemonheads   with some alcohol.  I would definitely recommend this for Ladies Night and I give it   4 stars out of 5.   Feel Free to comment and share with your friends! Conversations with My Mother: Grown Folks Conversation

When I was in high school like most seniors I turned 18 right before graduation.  Around that time the relationship begins to change a little between my mother and I and I was able to ask questions that I'm not sure I would have been able to ask at a younger age.  There was a song by a group called 'Solo' name "Where do you want me to put it?"        Being young I had so many questions and so little knowledge and didn't understand the half of the meaning of that song! My comment to my mother was why would they ask that question they don't know?   Mama:  I think it's very thoughtful since there are several places to choice from. Me: (with the wide eyes and everything) Have you ever had Oral Sex? (I asked in a loud whisper because I knew a slap was coming at any moment right) Mama: (after a moment a thought she answered) Well.......you can't just do anybody! and that was as much nerve as I had for that conversation!  Feel Free to comment

Moldy Cheese Day

Image
Moldy Cheese Day  is today. Do you have any moldy cheese in your refrigerator? Do you need to have moldy cheese to celebrate this day? And, if you have any moldy cheese, what would you do with it today? Every once in a while, we come across a special day that has no apparent rhyme or reason. Today is one of those days. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't celebrate this wonderful(?) and special holiday. Au contrare....... scour through the refrigerators at home and work today for moldy cheese. Office refrigerators are a great place to find moldy stuff. See if that moldy piece of cheese is salvageable. And, just enjoy the day. If you find moldy cheese , take a slice off each side. The insides should still be good. Did you Know?  Mold is common in cheese. Its part of what gives a particular cheese flavor and character. For example, the blue stuff in Blu Cheese is mold.   http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/October/moldycheeseday.htm Feel Fre

Conversations With My Grandmother: Your Joy!

A few weeks ago I got married. YAY!!!! Well I only told my kids, my mom and my grandmother. And  as you can guess for some people that didn't go over to well. Grandmother: So how is your friend? Me: She's fine, she's mad because I didn't tell her until after I did it. Grandmother: Am I missing something? Was that a requirement? Me: No, she said I didn't allow her to share in my happiness that I cut her out and it hurt her feelings. Grandmother:  Why do you kids always have to make somebody else's joy about you?  Ok, she can be mad but get over it! And you, Don't apologize for doing what makes you happy and at the end fo the day the only people that matter are you in him.  He loves you and right now your only focus should be being happy in the life you were given.  If your friends can't be happy in that maybe you need to decide if these are people you want around. So I'm going to leave that right there and be happy and enjoy the life I hav

Ladies Night

A few months ago The Mr. informed me that I should be at the age where I no longer brought boxed wine.  After careful contemplation and research I thought that maybe I would try his way. Especially since I considered that since moving to California I have found a benefit to recycling and buying bottles helps me earn more money I thought why not. Also I thought that maybe since I'm almost forty maybe he as a point!       Now I have to say that I have tried a lot of wines before.  Only now I have decided that maybe I needed to tell someone about them.  So of course it's you my lucky readers.  I have think I may look into doing a regular post and see how it goes.  This week choice was Cupcakes Vineyards Pinot Grigio.  I do not remember how much it was but I know to remember that for next time. I should also say that what I like in my wine is a fruity, sweet taste.  This had neither.  But I picked it simply because of the name and I wanted to try something new.  Well I got

Virus Appreciation Day

Date When Celebrated :  Always October 3 Virus Appreciation Day  is today. It gives us the opportunity to show a little respect for nasty viruses. Respect!? You want to give viruses respect? I should think not. Rather, let's give them a good dose of penicillin. Unfortunately, the creators of this day did not identify themselves. Nor, did they leave a record of what kind of viruses we are supposed to appreciate on this day. Human, animal and computer viruses readily come to mind. We sure can appreciate the seriousness and significance of both human and computer viruses. And, we can worry that animal (aka bird flu) viruses may jump over to affect humans. So, let's dedicate today to appreciating that viruses can be very serious, if not deadly. Let's then take measures to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and even our computers. to minimize the risk of serious viruses. Perhaps  Virus Appreciation Day  would be better if titled  Virus Awareness and Protection

Balloons Around The World

Balloons Around The World is a made-up holiday that aims to spread cheer around the world. It is celebrated annually on October 1. The unofficial holiday was created by Jeff Brown in 2000. The holiday encourages people to use balloons and the art of balloon twisting and decorating to bring smiles to the faces of those around them. Animal Bladders Balloons are bags, usually colorful and made of rubber or latex that can be filled with air or gases like Helium. Early balloons were made of animal bladders. While balloons are frequently used for decorative purposes, they can also be used for transportation, to gather atmospheric information, and by doctors to open up clogged arteries. How to Celebrate? Have a party and use balloons for decoration. Learn how to make balloon animals and objects. If you already know how to make balloon objects, make some and give out to random people on the street and see them smile. What about taking that special one on a hot air balloon ride?

Conversations with my Mother: He said he wanted to go to higher places!

Me: Mama! Mama: What's wrong? Me: He broke up with me? Mama: What? Why? What happened? Me:  We were standing at his locker and he have me this old dirty looking yellow bear and some dead flowers and he said that he went to church last night and he prayed and God told him if we wanted to go to higher places that he had to do it alone. This Day in History

The Sewing Machine is patented. (1846) Sewing Machine Day  celebrates a very important invention ----- the sewing machine. The first sewing machines were made in France in the 1830s. It wasn't until 1846, that they were patented in the U.S. What a great invention. Prior to it's creation, clothes items were sewn together by hand...stitch by stitch. People who know how to use a sewing machine are dwindling in number. Our mothers and grandmothers had a sewing machine in the house. They used it, too. But, look around your house. Do you have a sewing machine? Chance are, the answers is no. If you have a sewing machine, enjoy today making things with it. If not, consider picking up sewing as a hobby.  Today's Saying:  "A stitch in time saves nine."  Interpretation: Saves nine what, you ask. Well, stitches of course. One stitch made right away, prevents further breakage and will not require nine more stitches later. Feel Free to comment and share with y
