       Summer Solstice is sometimes referred to as "Midsummer" Litha". It's the longest day of the year. The amount of daylight only goes down from here....for the next six months (more on that later). Summer Solstice is the meteorological start of summer. It's time to enjoy vacations, great weather, pools, baseballs, and everything else that goes along with the favorite season of kids and most adults. Grab your favorite beverage and enjoy the season, because for many of us it is all too short. Did you know?  The sun does not set at the North Pole today. There is 24 hours of sunlight. Does it make up for that cold day in December when the sun does not rise above the horizon? Date When Celebrated :  Always the first Friday in June National Doughnut Day honors the Salvation Army "Lassies" of WWI. It is also used as a fund raiser for needy causes of the Salvation Army. The original Salvation Army Doughnut was first served by Salvation Army in 1917. During WWI, Salvation Army "lassies" were sent to the front lines of Europe. These brave volunteers made home cooked foods, and provided a morale boost to the troops. Often, the doughnuts were cooked in oil inside the of the metal helmet of an American soldier. The American infantrymen were commonly called doughboys. Salvation Army lassies were the only women outside of military personnel allowed to visit the front lines. Lt. Colonel Helen Purviance is considered the Salvation Army's "first doughnut girl". Date When Celebrated :  Always June 1 Dare Day  is a day to challenge someone, and to do a dare yourself. It's a day that daredevils truely relish. Today is definitely a call to action. It is not a day for procrastinators or for hesitation. Dares take all forms and shapes. The type of dare is almost limitless. Whether it is a prank, a challenge to accomplish something, or a personal action (like asking someone out on a date), this is the day to make the dare. And, its the day to do the dare. Date When Celebrated:  Friday before Memorial Day Don't Fry Friday  is a very important day for you and your skin. It occurs just as the Memorial holiday begins, and at the start of summer. At this time, sunshine is the most intense. People are seeking the sunshine and the great outdoors after a long winter. The purpose of today, is to educate people, and to make them aware of the dangers of overexposure to UVA and UVB rays. These UV rays come from the sun, and from popular tanning booths. They are the primary cause of skin cancer. Very Important:  Skin cancer is very treatable and curable, if caught early. Unfortunately, early detection does not always occur. If you have even the slightest suspicion, go get checked out by your doctor.... immediately. A little sunshine is good for you. It provides important vitamin D, and sunshine brightens your mood. And, none of them are good. Unfortunately, child abductions can happen to any child, any family. No one is immune to child predators. We don't say this to scare you. We say it to help promote awareness and education to help you guard against it.  Did you know?  The U.S. Department of Justice estimates more than 50,000 children are victims of non-family abductions annually. What you can do: Review and enforce child protection and safety awareness regularly with your children.
