George Washington Carver

Born:  c.  1860 Died:  January 5 ,  1943 Birthplace:  Diamond Grove ,  Missouri ,  United States Best known as:  America's great peanut innovator George Washington Carver was a celebrated botanist and inventor at a time when it was still rare for African-Americans to reach those heights. The son of a Missouri slave, George Washington Carver grew up to attend Iowa State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1894 and a master’s in 1896. He then joined the faculty of  Booker T. Washington ‘s Tuskegee Institute. Carver’s attempts to find crop alternatives to cotton led him to study and work with the peanut. Eventually he created more than 325 products from the humble legume, helping to create demand for the plant and establish it as a major American crop. Although George Washington Carver is often credited with inventing peanut butter,  it seems others had created that product before Carver began his own work with peanuts. Susan B Anthony Day Date When Celebrated :  Always February 15 Today honors the birthday of Susan B. Anthony, one of the most important females in American history. Born on February 15, 1820, Susan B Anthony spent her life pushing women's right to vote and equal rights for women. She was arrested in 1872, for attempting to vote in the presidential elections. She helped bring about the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. For 40 years, Susan B. Anthony was a women's rights and civil rights activist and leader. As a child she moved to Rochester, NY with her family. Her family was active in the anti-slavery movement. From there, she became active in the fight for women's rights. Here home on 17 Madison Street in Rochester, NY. has become a National Historical site, and home to a museum about her and women's rights. Susan B Anthony is the only woman to date, to have her picture on  a U.S.coin or paper currency. It is on the silver dollar.

Today you can make a few pennies, by seeking out lost pennies, of which there are probably quite a few in the nooks and crannies of your home. Langston Hughes  died at  65 years old Born:  February 1 ,  1902 Died:  May 22 ,  1967  ( post-surgical heart failure ) Birthplace:  Joplin ,  Missouri ,  United States Best known as:  Author of  The Weary Blues  (1926) Langston Hughes published more than three dozen books during his life, starting out with poetry and then expanding into novels, short stories, and plays. He is closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of African-American literature and music in New York City following World War One, but he wrote poetry, books, and newspaper columns right through into the 1960s. Hughes’s work often spoke plainly about the lives of ordinary black people, which in later years earned him a reputation as one of the major black voices of the 1900s. His works include the poetry volumes  The Weary Blues  (1926) and  Shakespeare  in Harlem  (1942), the novel  Not Without Laughter  (1930), and the short story collection  The Ways of White Folks  (1934)
